This Standard specifies the minimum operational and performance requirements and methods of testing for RTCM Electronic Chart Systems (ECS). RTCM ECS are designed or adapted for use on vessels not required to carry Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), i.e. larger commercial vessels.
In order to provide a standard that can be used to apply different levels of navigational functionality, three classes of RTCM ECS are defined:
? Class A RTCM ECS are designed as a primary means of navigation.
? Class B RTCM ECS are designed as a primary means of navigation but with fewer features than Class A RTCM ECS.
? Class C RTCM ECS are designed with functionality intended to plot and monitor a vessel?s position.
This Standard incorporates International Standard IEC 62376 by reference and includes additional requirements ?above and beyond? an IEC ECS. For example:
? Class A RTCM ECS are designed to meet the requirements for ECDIS back-up arrangements contained in International Standard IEC 61174 Annex F;
? Class A and B RTCM ECS are designed with expanded voyage data recording; and
? Class A, B and C RTCM ECS are designed to interface with AIS and display information, from AIS; including, but not necessarily limited to vessels, SAR aircraft and Aids to Navigation.
